Checklist to Building an Online Business
Step 1: Build your email list on a consistent basis by designing a strategy to generate traffic to your opt-in page.
- Optimize your website on search by consistently posting to your website a weekly blog, YouTube video, or podcast that attract new visitors with the goal to opt into your email list.
- Design a social media strategy to promote your opt-in.
- Drive traffic to your website via paid ads (Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Instagram, or YouTube) at an affordable price.
- Collaborate with affiliate partners to drive traffic to your opt-in by participating in their podcast, acting as a guest blogger, collaborative social media posts, or joint video promotions.
Step 2: Turn email subscribers into paying customers.
- Design a website that describes who you are, what you do, and what services/products you offer.
- Test and retest different freebies to find the ideal lead magnet that moves a lead from opt-in to purchase.
- Test and retest your opt-in page, continually improving conversion rates. This includes improving messages, images, layout, and branding on a continual basis.
- Sending emails on a consistent basis to nurture your list so they'll be ready to buy.
- Continually analyze and design a written tracking method at the different conversion points of your funnel (conversion rate of opt-in page, conversion rate of sales based on number of subscribers, etc.).
- Brainstorm new methods to improve the lowest conversion points.
Step 3: Figure out what your audience needs then create an offer that fulfills those needs.
- Join Facebook groups with your target market then act as a voyeur gaining insight on their needs.
- Offer to help and answer questions for free to your target market.
- Gather snippets of the words they use to describe their problem. These words will become "your message" when designing an opt-in then later will help in copywriting the sales page to your offer.
Step 4: Design an offer that your audience wants and is willing to pay for.
- This also involves testing and retesting different offers to confirm which offer receives the highest conversion rate. It could be your messaging or it could be your offer, if sales are lower than expected. It could also be your sales mechanism in how your offer is presented.
- Design products of different prices points and stages to fulfill each stage of the success path of your audience.
Step 5: Craft an idea of the best sales mechanism to present your offer.
- Your sales mechanism could be a webinar, a sales page, an email marketing plan, or a sales call, just to name a few.
- Different ways of presenting your offer will yield different results, so this can also be tested to confirm which converts best.
Step 6: Fulfill on the offer your audience purchased.
- Provide them with the online course or coaching program as promised.
- This can involve setting up onboarding emails encouraging them along the way to complete the program leading to the transformation they desire.
- To provide a great experience, you'll set up your offer to exceed audience expectations.
As you can see, designing a digital course or online service can be a full-time job. As well, it's never truly complete. Marketing is all about testing and re-testing.
It's a common request for someone to ask for "a high converting sales page" but this is a lifelong goal in reality and so many factors are involved.
