- Last week, Step 1 was covered - Understand Your Audience's Needs and Values
This week's topic continues.... Step 2 of BRANDING.
Step 2 in branding is all about identifying your strengths, which are the core qualities that set you apart from your competitors.
Step-by-Step: Differentiating Yourself from Your Competitors
What are the skills, qualities, and expertise that make you unique? Consider what you've achieved, the feedback you've received, and the things you consistently excel at.
Your strengths are more than just skills. They’re the building blocks of your brand’s identity.
When you’re clear on your strengths, you can confidently weave them into your messaging.
Step 2 in Branding: Uncovering Your Strengths (and sharing those strengths in Your Messaging)
By weaving strengths into your messaging, you’re not just listing what you do, you’re showing potential clients why you are the one and only choice to solve their problem.
Start by listing your:
- Core skills
- Knowledge areas
- Specific qualities that people often compliment you on
This can be anything from the expertise you’ve developed over time, to your unique approach, or the personality traits that make clients love working with you. Think about the specific results you’ve helped clients achieve and how those successes might reflect your strengths.
EXAMPLES:
#1 Skills and Knowledge Examples:
Consider any specialized knowledge or skills that make you an expert in your industry.
- Wellness Coach: You may excel at helping clients find a balanced approach to health that actually fits into their busy lives. Your knowledge might cover a range of topics such as nutrition, mindful movement, stress management, and clients often tell you that your personalized approach makes their wellness journey feel sustainable, not overwhelming. You’re also known for your warm, encouraging style that makes clients feel supported and motivated without pressure, which you could showcase as a core strength in your messaging.
- Financial Consultant: Perhaps your unique skill is simplifying complex financial strategies for clients who feel overwhelmed by managing their finances. You’re skilled in areas like debt reduction, investment planning, or budgeting for specific goals, such as retirement or buying a home. Clients often tell you that you’re able to make financial planning accessible and even enjoyable, thanks to your clear explanations and practical steps. Your messaging could emphasize your ability to demystify financial planning and bringing clients confidence about their financial futures.
#2 Client Results Examples:
Reflect on the outcomes you’ve helped your clients achieve and connect them to your skills.
Career Coach Client Results: You may specialize in guiding mid-level professionals who feel stuck in their current roles and want to transition into more fulfilling careers. You have a knack for helping clients identify their core strengths, reframe their experience, and develop a strategy for landing roles that match their goals and values.
- Increased Confidence: Clients frequently report that, after working with you, they feel a renewed sense of confidence and clarity in their career direction. For example, a client who previously felt unsure about her skillset was able to secure a leadership role by learning how to communicate her unique value effectively during interviews.
- Secured Higher-Paying Roles: Many clients have successfully transitioned into roles that not only align better with their personal goals but also come with a significant pay increase. You helped one client move from a mid-level position to a management role in a new industry, resulting in a 30% salary boost.
Nutrition Consultant Client Results: You may focus on helping clients with chronic health conditions, like digestive issues or high blood pressure, improve their well-being through personalized nutrition plans. Your approach blends evidence-based nutrition with practical, easy to implement strategies, making it manageable for clients to achieve long term health improvements.
- Improved Health Metrics: Clients often see significant health improvements, like reduced cholesterol or stabilized blood sugar levels, within a few months of working with you. For instance, one client with high blood pressure was able to lower their numbers into a healthy range through diet changes, avoiding the need for medication.
- Sustainable Lifestyle Changes: Rather than quick fixes, you help clients build lasting habits that fit their lifestyle. One client with chronic digestive issues transitioned to a diet plan that eliminated their symptoms within weeks and reported feeling more energized and comfortable in their daily life, thanks to the realistic and enjoyable meal options you provided.
#3 Unique Qualities and Personality Traits Examples:
Think about the compliments you receive that go beyond skills, traits like patience, empathy, or humor. For example, maybe people often tell you that you’re an amazing listener, which could reflect your strength in understanding your clients’ unique needs.
Putting It Together
Once you have your list, you can start to see themes. Maybe you’re a strategic thinker with a genuine care for client success. Or, you’re highly skilled at breaking down complex ideas into easy, actionable steps.
These strengths can now be woven into your messaging to help you communicate your unique value.
Finally, you'll update your website, social profiles, and any marketing copy to reflect these strengths. Use language that brings them to life and shows your audience how these strengths will help them reach their goals.
STRENGTHS - IMPLEMENTATION EXAMPLES:
Nutritionist Before: "Helping you eat healthier and feel better."
- After: "Nourish your digestive system with foods that promote gut health and reduce discomfort. With a personalized approach, I’ll guide you to find foods that soothe, energize, and restore balance, so you can enjoy every meal without worry."
Interior Designer Before: "Transforming homes into beautiful spaces."
- After: "Create a stylish, sustainable home that’s safe and welcoming for both you and your pets. From eco-friendly materials to pet-friendly layouts, I design spaces that reduce environmental impact while keeping your pets comfortable, happy, and free to roam, all within a compact urban setting."
