Check out all the people in this photo! This is the evolution of the human.

Did you find yourself sitting up a little straighter after seeing that photo? If so, you're a victim of our time and exactly who should be reading this.

Did you know that I went to school to become a chiropractor? Yep, I hold a degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic and had a practice on the east coast for some time. I may know what I'm talking about when it comes to proper posture!

As online course creators and coaches, we find ourselves spending prolonged hours at our desks, typing away on keyboards and staring at computer screens. Obviously it takes a toll on our posture and overall musculoskeletal health.

The Importance of Desk Posture:

  1. Spinal Health: Good posture is crucial for maintaining a healthy spine. Poor posture can lead to misalignments, muscle imbalances, and even chronic conditions like back pain and herniated discs.

  2. Muscle Engagement: Proper posture ensures that the right muscles are engaged, promoting balance and preventing strain. It helps distribute the workload evenly across the musculoskeletal system.

  3. 👉👉Respiratory Function: Believe it or not, posture affects your breathing. A hunched or slouched position can compress your lungs, making it harder to breathe deeply. Maintaining an upright posture allows for optimal respiratory function.

What do to about it:

  1. Chair and Desk Setup:

    • Your chair should support the natural curve of your spine. Adjust the height to ensure your feet are flat on the floor and your knees are at a 90-degree angle.
    • The desk height should allow your elbows to rest comfortably at a 90-degree angle when typing.
  2. Monitor Placement:

    • Position your monitor at eye level to reduce strain on your neck. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below your eye level.
  3. Keyboard and Mouse Placement:

    • Keep your keyboard and mouse close enough that your elbows are close to your body and form an angle between 90 and 120 degrees.
  4. Take Breaks and Stretch:

    • Stand up, stretch, and walk around every 30 minutes. Incorporate stretches for your neck, shoulders, and lower back to prevent stiffness.
  5. Proper Sitting Position:

    • Sit back in your chair with your back straight and shoulders relaxed. Use a small cushion for lumbar support if needed.
  6. Exercise Regularly:

    • Strengthening your core and back muscles through regular exercise can significantly contribute to maintaining good posture

Be mindful of your posture throughout the day.

If you feel any discomfort, adjust your position or take a short break.

Small, conscious efforts can lead to significant improvements in your overall musculoskeletal health.
